Yoga, an ancient Indian practice, has been globally regarded as a holistic means to good health and a form of complementary and alternative medicine. The word “Yoga” is derived from the Sanskrit root “Yuj” meaning ‘to join’ or ‘to unite’. This unity signifies the union of body, mind, intellect and soul in order to attain a state of mindfulness.

With the aim of making the youth realize this state of mindfulness, SAM Workshops, the youth empowerment drive of DJJS, organised an ingenious Yoga Workshop on 31st May 2022 at Prudence School, Sector 22, Dwarka, New Delhi, for students of classes 9th to 12th as part of its Yoga@SAM Campaign to celebrate International Yoga Day 2022. SAM Volunteers received a warm welcome from Mr. Ritesh Sharma, Principal, Prudence School, and by both faculty and student bodies.

SAM got the opportunity to introduce 250+ students to several yoga-asanas in a fun and meaningful fashion. The event commenced with students performing the ultimate asana- ‘Surya Namaskar’, having physical and mental benefits ranging from reducing anxiety and curing insomnia to skin detoxification and boosting the immunity. This was followed by a series of mild intensive stretches and activities which included jumping jacks, mountain climbers, and neck and shoulder rotation exercises.

The students then participated in a fun and practical session on the importance of asanas and pranayama in academics and personal well-being. This included performing the Butterfly pose (Baddha Konasana), Marichyasana, Tadasana and Tree pose for boosting mental awareness and correcting muscle imbalances, regular and twisted Head to knee pose (Janu Sirsasana) for reducing stress and fatigue, Wheel pose (Chakrasana) for improving eyesight and correcting posture deformities, Shavasana and Yog Nidra, regarded as calming poses, for improving concentration and for calming the autonomic nervous system and, Anulom Vilom for improving cognitive functioning and sharpening of memory, to name a few. The event concluded with a collective Om Chanting and recitation of the Gayatri Mantra, thus purifying the micro and macro cosmos and generating positivity and calmness in the participants’ minds.

The event was rated highly and appreciated by the students and teachers alike. More such events are regularly being organized by SAM Workshops for creating a positive impact on youngsters and guiding them towards leading a healthy and blissful life.
